In New Jersey, there has been some recent hubbub about making all would-be school board members undergo criminal background checks prior to being able to get on the ballot.

Though most individuals are in favor of the regulation (and it looks like it’s being passed in the NJ legislature), some are worried about certain elements of it. Namely:

It happened recently in New London, Wisconsin. A school bus driver was charged with sexually assaulting the kids on his bus. He had slipped through the cracks because he was hired before the company for whom he worked was expected to perform background checks on all drivers.

A report from Nashville, Tennessee’s NewsChannel5.com reveals what we’ve seen more and more often recently: School districts that are mandating all parent volunteers go through background checking.

For many parents, it may come as a shock that there are schools that don’t background screen any person who has access to their child(ren). After all, school is supposed to be a “safe” place for kids to go. But there are many schools that deem such actions as “too costly” to undertake.
