When Was the Last Time Your Employee Handbook Got a Facelift?

Here’s an experiment:

First, get out your employee handbook.

Oh, you’re having trouble finding it?  No problem… there’s no hurry…

Waiting…

Waiting…

Hey, should you check in the drawer, behind the stale M&Ms?  Yeah!  Could it be that binder that’s been collecting dust?  Yup.  There it is.  Your employee handbook.  The one that’s dusty.  The one that hasn’t been updated since Generation Y was in diapers.

It’s time to give that dated employee handbook a much-needed facelift!

Let’s face it — most of the time, employee handbooks are a one-shot deal.  They are distributed with fanfare only to gradually become more and more outdated.  But they don’t have to be that way at all!

If your employee handbook is about as relevant as a copy of “War and Peace” written in Sanskrit, you absolutely need to make it a priority in 2010 to shake out the cobwebs and make it shine again.  Doing so will not only make it more pertinent, but it will also force your employees to take a look at it — perhaps for the first time.  In turn, that will encourage rules to be followed a little more closely, which is better in the long run for everyone.

Do something great for your business.  Starting now, add an updated employee handbook as an item on your corporate “to do” list.
