There was a sobering piece out of Florida last week. According to an article from the Associated Press:
“Disturbing flaws in Florida’s background screening system have put children, seniors and the disabled in the care of convicted felons with records that include rape, child molestation and murder, an investigation by the Sun Sentinel newspaper has found…”
It’s shocking to hear that some organizations are willing to put people on the job before background check results come back. It’s even more shocking that, according to the investigation, thousands of individuals with serious criminal records are being placed in situations where they have access to children, medical patients and the elderly.
This piece emphasizes one important thing about background checks — they only work if you use them. And that means waiting until the results come back before hiring ANYONE.
Even if you’re only looking for a receptionist, WAIT. You never know what kind of past history he or she could have that could change your mind. Put another way… would you want someone who had been convicted of embezzlement to have access to even the smallest amount of petty cash in the office? Would your colleagues? And can you afford that kind of mistake?
