Question of the Day What If You Like Someone and The Background Screening Result Comes Back with Black Marks?

What if I interview someone and really like him or her but the background check results reveal black marks?  Do I have to allow him or her to go?

Answer:

Great question!  As an employer, it’s really up to you.  But know that you might be taking a risk.

For instance, if you discover that the only bad thing on his or her record is a bankruptcy, that may seem innocent enough at first glace.  After all, a lot of people have found themselves in debt these days.

But imagine if that person had not taken control of his or her financial well-being.  Maybe he or she will be tempted to take a little out of the till now and then to pay off credit cards…  See the issue?

With that being said, you do have control over whom you hire.  So if you’re impressed by everything else about the person but have concerns over a problem on his or her background check results, it’s fair to sit down and discuss it with your prospective employee.
